DISC - Database InfraStructure Committee

Database InfraStructure Committee (DISC) is a national committee for the creation of a common infrastructure of databases for research.  DISC works for the creation of databases, adaptation of laws, development of technologies and establishment of organizations which lead to such an infrastructure.

DISC is a part of the Council for Research Infrastructures (RFI) under the Swedish Research Council.

What do we want?

  • Cheaper and faster access to data
  • Research funds spent on common solutions
  • Creation of additional databases
  • Improved access to existing databases
  • Elimination of legal bars against efficient registry research
  • Better documentation systems
  • Move registries into E-science
  • Increased international collaboration

How?

  • Legalize the creation of general purpose register-based databases
  • Permit ethics committees to review database project proposals
  • Fund only infrastructure projects that extend beyond individual research projects
  • Pay only once for access to the same data
  • Develop registries with research in mind
  • Provide the international community with access to Swedish registry data
  • Facilitate access to international datasources
  • Interoperability
  • Accomplish a common ontology for research data
  • Accomplish common technical solutions

Current activities within DISC:

  • Microdata ONline Access (MONA)
  • Swedish National Dataservice: (1) Humanities, Medicin and Social Science, SND HMS; (2) Climate and Environment (SND KM)
